What qualifications do I need?

No qualification is required to do any of the courses. All the courses are part time courses and are designed for the enthusiast and hobbyist photographer.

No photographic experience is required to do the following courses:

To do any of the advanced photographic courses you first need to complete the Fundamentals of Digital Photography course. If you feel you are proficient in photography and would like to move on to an advanced course without doing the Fundamentals course, then please contact us on 086 11 PHOTO or photo@codp.co.za for advice.

To do the "Photoshop - Advanced Elements" or "Photoshop - Advanced Techniques CS" course you first need to complete the Photoshop - The Essentials course.

I have a Compact Digital Camera – which course do I begin with?

If you have a Compact Digital Camera then we recommend you begin with the “Discover Digital Photography” course.

This part time photography course is designed for complete novices and will give you a better understanding of your camera and the world of photography. You will learn how to capture amazing photographs using your digital camera.

Please click HERE for further information on the Discover Digital Photography course

I have a Digital SLR Camera - which course do I begin with?

If you have a Digital SLR camera then we recommend you begin with the Fundamentals of Digital Photography course.

The Fundamental of Digital Photography course is a part time 5 week course designed to teach you all the basic principles of photography. These will help you take full control of your camera and help you make the correct choices to immediately improve your photography. You will be required to complete assignments on the course and go on an early Sunday morning outing after Lesson 4.

We have recently launched the "Fundamentals Express" course, which is a condensed 3 week version of this course.

Please click HERE for further information on the Fundamentals of Digital Photography course

What equipment do I need?

To do the “Discover Digital Photography” course you need either a Compact Digital Camera or a Digital SLR camera.

To do the “Fundamentals of Digital Photography” or any of the advanced courses, you need a Digital SLR camera and a sturdy tripod. There are a limited number of digital cameras available for hire. If you are unsure if your camera is suitable or if you’d like advice on what to buy then please feel free to contact us on 086 11 PHOTO or photo@codp.co.za.

At the Saxonwold campus, no photographic or computer equipment is necessary to do the Photoshop courses. Each student will be provided with his/her own workstation and a CD containing a trial version of the latest Photoshop, as well as images used on the course, so you can practice at home. At the other campuses you might be required to bring your own laptop to class. Please contact us for more details.

How are the courses structured?

The courses are all part time and run once a week for 1 to 5 weeks, depending on the course. Most of the courses have a high practical ingredient, where you will be required to complete assignments in your own time. Some of the courses have a weekend outing, usually on a Sunday - please check those details on the relevant course information pages.

On all the courses you will be provided with comprehensive, full colour course notes, which support what is taught in class.

We also offer a number of exiting photographic outings and workshops - please see the individual offerings for exact details.

Do you offer Photoshop® courses?

Yes, we offer 3 different Photoshop courses:

Basic Photoshop - The Essentials

Photoshop - Advanced Elements

Photoshop - Advanced Techniques CS

Each student will be provided with his/her own workstation and a CD containing a trial version of the latest Photoshop software, as well as images used on the course, so you can practice at home.

The "Basic Photoshop - The Essentials" is for the beginner and will help you understand the work area, and master the different menu options, tools and palettes that are part of the image editing process. This course is designed to give you a good understanding of the most useful tools in Photoshop from a photographer’s perspective. This course can be done using either Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CS software.

The "Photoshop - Advanced Elements" is an ideal continuation once you have completed the Basic Photoshop course and if you are using Photoshop Elements software. You will be shown various advanced techniques that are used on a daily basis by advanced photographers.

The "Photoshop - Advanced Techniques CS" is an ideal continuation once you have completed the Basic Photoshop course and if you are using Photoshop CS software. You will be shown various advanced techniques that are used on a daily basis by advanced photographers.

What happens if I miss a lesson?

If you miss a lesson due to unforeseen circumstances, please contact the College on 086 11 PHOTO or photo@codp.co.za to see whether we can accommodate you on another course.

What age do I need to be to do a course?

The courses are designed for anyone aged 15 years or older. We have taught students younger than this, but please contact us for advice if you are unsure. We also offer various school holiday courses which are great for keeping your kids entertained during the holidays!

Of course it is never too late to learn and to explore the wonderful world of digital photography. We have had students over the age of 80 who were doubtful in the beginning, but now keep coming back for more courses!

Do I get a certificate once I’ve completed a course?

You do receive a certificate at the end of the course, but please note that this is a certificate of attendance and completion of the practical assignments. It is not a formal qualification.

Do you offer private courses?

We unfortunately do not offer private courses for individuals. Due to the practical nature of the courses, we have found that your learning experience is far better when you are in a group of like-minded people. A big part of your learning curve is to see and experience what the other students have done.

Private courses are offered to businesses, friends or social clubs that can put a group of 10 or more people together. We will gladly present the course either at one of our branches or at a venue of your choice.

How do I pay for a course and is a deposit required?

You can pay by Internet Transfer or Direct Deposit, by Credit Card either by contacting us with your details or coming in to the college, or by Cheque.

Once you have enrolled for a course you will receive an e-mail with your invoice attached. The invoice contains our the banking details and the customer number you must use as a reference. Please note that full payment is required to secure your booking.

Where and when are the courses held?

The courses are held in Saxonwold, Fourways, Pretoria and Cape Town. Directions and contact details for each venue can be found by clicking on "Contact Us."

The photography courses are generally held on weekday evenings from 18h00 - 21h00. Some of the courses are held on weekday or Saturday mornings from 9h30 - 12h30. A course will start on a specific day and then runs weekly on this day for 1 to 5 weeks (depending on length of the course).

For those of you who would prefer weekday mornings we will gladly present a course for 10 people or more, either at one of our branches or at a venue of your choice.

Please click HERE for further Venue information

Refunds and cancellations?

Please note that course fees are non-refundable unless the College, for whatever reasons, should cancel or postpone a particular course.

If you cannot make a course due to unforeseen circumstances, we will gladly try and accommodate you on a later course, space permitting.
